To do that, we start by understanding as much as possible about the functionality and objectives of the machine — that is, we make sure we understand the real design specifications. From there, we model the mechanics and we attach to it the muscles and brains of the drives and motors and the intelligence embedded into the motion controllers and their internal software applications that will achieve the needed functionality.
This implies creating a virtual machine operation. We can come very close to an accurate picture of the final machine’s performance without spending money for prototyping. For example, we can see how much oscillation is involved, or whether a given motion can be done in 500 milliseconds or less. Better than that, we can explain why a given function is possible, or if not, why not—the structure will bend, or forces are positioned wrong, or the controller has not be correctly optimized. The result is confidence in a given design, the assurance that it will meet or exceed requirements.
Our goal is to understand the new machine from its very basic components to the complex ways that everything works together. It involves using specific tools correctly, collecting the necessary data and interpreting it correctly. For existing machines mechatronics it’s like forensic engineering and allows us to see and communicate the root-causes and indicate exactly how to improve it.
